At work not doing work
Posted on January 31, 2006 | Filed Under Day to day, Family, Friends
It was so nice on my way home last night to have it be clear, not raining, and still light out! Ive been enjoying the daylight lately by walking home from the skytrain rather than busing. Ive even been able to see some pretty sunsets, when it hasnt been cloudy and raining.
I had very busy weekend: Left work early on Friday to catch the PCL for the 7pm ferry to go over to Victoria to my parent’s place. Up early Saturday to meet Adrienne for brunch and four hours of bridesmaid dress-trying-on at the bridal shop. I found a style of dress that looked great and got measured. Turns out my measurements are hourglass-y but a bit higher in each than I expected…Ill have to be careful to not gain weight between now and July 31st.
Being around all those wedding dresses made me want to find one
heh.
Saturday night had a big yummy family dinner…mmm, it was nice to have some mom’s cooking. And then up early Sunday to make the 11am ferry and get back home. Made it to the bus station by 130 to find that everyone in the city was trying to get into or out of chinatown (for chinese new years parade?) and there was no way I was getting a bus, so I braved the rain and wind and walked home. Home just after 2 to crawl into bed for a nap and to warm up. Slept in a little but made to Mel’s party just a little late. As usual, Mel was a great hostess and we had fun, watching movies and eating goodies. Halfway through my second glass of red wine I realized that it was Sunday night not Saturday and I had to go to work the next morning
Last night was quiet and relaxing, and quite domestic. Did many dishes, and three loads of laundry and hung out at home with Jules, who was very happy to sit on my lap and watch tv with me. Im glad that the show about a plane crash didnt give me nightmares, it was kinda scary. Jeremy worked late and made it home around 930. Sounds like its a busy week at work and he’ll be working late…Ive been getting used to him being home right after me lately
Anyone wanna do something this week? Ill be at home with my cat ![]()

Testing TextDrive… 1… 2… 3…
If you read this, if your eyes are passing over this right now, even if we don’t speak often (or ever, for that matter), please post a comment with a COMPLETELY MADE UP AND FICTIONAL MEMORY OF YOU AND ME.
It can be anything you want—good or bad—BUT IT HAS TO BE FAKE.
And now you can consider yourself tagged, so go post this meme on your blog.
I got tagged by Neil’s blog entry.
In other news… the MySQL import of the blog data somehow thought I was Sweedish — and aparently the Sweedes don’t use auto_increment on their tables (all of the auto-increment fields got turned into normal fields).

aedion.net - hotter than the average website
Posted on January 28, 2006 | Filed Under Nerding Out
My web-server/router had 4-5 lock-ups over the past four days. Cracked it open to take a look and pretty much everything is covered in dust. I looked in the BIOS and installed lm-sensors to check on the CPU temperature, and it was sitting at around 60-65 degrees Celsius. This is about 20-30 degrees over what it should normally be running at, dangerously close to frying entirely.
I vacuumed out the CPU fan and heatsink, declogged the power supply (also full of dust & hair), and things seemed to work for a while. CPU was at 45 degrees, motherboard at 35… hot, but not too hot.
But, it crashed after 4 hours. Rebooted, crashed after 3… then 2-ish… eventually it would only stay on for 30 minutes at a time. I think the CPU’s melted =(. Capacitors on the motherboard look fine, so it’s not that… memtest86 doesn’t show any memory errors (while it’s not entirely hung, that is)… don’t know for sure.
Anyway, “enough of this crap,” I said. Bought a TextDrive hosting plan and i’m going to pick up a cheap D-Link gateway on the way to Chris’ this evening.
If you’re reading this, then setting things up on TextDrive went well.

Been a while
Posted on January 25, 2006 | Filed Under Randomness, Day to day
It’s been a while since i’ve written anything, so i thought i’d just jot down something quick.
Had dinner at Chris and Mel’s tonight. Had some excelent painted desert salad from the Rebar cookbook we got Mel for her birthday. To all observers assured excitement, i savoured every morsel.
On the way home to the skytrain, it started pouring rain. I was drenched in little over a minute. I haven’t seen it rain that hard and suddenly (both starting and stopping) since our vacation to Hawaii a year and a bit ago.
In other news, i’ve finally been getting stuff done at work, as opposed to just talking about doing things. I’ve also been playing way — way — too much of this game, where i role-play the life of a deep space miner (insert neeerd noises here).

Stinky bus
Posted on January 24, 2006 | Filed Under Randomness, Rants
Coming home tonight I had two very uncomfortable bus rides. First was a crazy packed bus up main st to the grocery store. There was a young businessman beside me who somehow couldnt seem to tell that the corner of his huge briefcase kept whacking me on the leg! grrrr…theres no way that you cant feel your bag hitting someone else, and its common courtesy to put your bag between your feet so as not to hit people with it or at least try to hold it still…
Coming back home from the grocery store I got on the bus and the driver yells out “Watch out for the dog excrement!” I could tell he wanted to say ” sh!t” Someone had walked on the bus earlier with a HUGE clump of the stinkiest dog poo ever on their shoe and it was stuck to the floor by the front…and it was stinking up the WHOLE bus. Everyone had opened their windows and it was just so awful. At broadway he stopped and said “LAST STOP! I cant stand this smell!!” so he made everyone get off while he cleaned it…I just walked the rest of the way home thankful for the fresh, clean, crisp air ![]()

PS- A public service announcement- If anyone has eaten at the Foundation vegetarian restaurant on Main St in the last little while, you might wanna go to your doctor:
They had an employee working there in the kitchen who has hepatitis.

Paging Doctor Anybody…
Posted on January 21, 2006 | Filed Under Randomness
So I missed dim sum today because I instead went to the doctor AGAIN. The clinic that I’ve been going to wasn’t open so I went to another one nearby. The sinus cold/infection I have been fighting for the past two weeks has moved up into my right eyeball so I look just hideous. Apparently there is ducts/sinuses that lead from the nose to the eye and so my eyeball has a cold now too. I came home and opened the drops he gave me only to read that these drops are for inner ear infections…?
Can anyone recommend a doctor that Jeremy and I can go to? We found a listing of general practice doctors in Vancouver who are taking new patients, but I’d rather be told by someone if their doctor is good and just go with them rather than calling and having meetings with random doctors. I dont think these clinic doctors are doing it, since their job is to get you out of there as quick as they can (with ear rather than eye drops), and not to look after your health.
I dont trust these “ear” drops enough to use them and Jeremy has the phone with him so I cant call that doctor and ask him. So I’m gonna curl up on the couch with my disgusting red eyeball and watch dvds.

Do I smell?
Posted on January 20, 2006 | Filed Under Day to day, Friends
Even though our friends have really good reasons its makes me sad to be stood up two nights in a row…Last night dinner guest was stuck in a work meeting which was of course totally understandable, and tonight friends that we were to meet for dinner were tired from skiing all day and had to get on flight tomorrow so Jeremy and I went out by ourselves and felt lonely
We are gonna be getting up early tomorrow to meet friend for brunch that missed dinner last night. Im a little scared of dim sum, but I guess I’ll give it a try? but I draw the line at chicken feet? Do people really eat that?
Only other plans for the weekend is shopping with Laura on Sunday, and I’m looking forward to it.
Just chatted with my friend Jen and found out she is coming over to Vancouver tomorrow to see a guy she has had only one date with. If he turns out to be crazy, she’ll be visiting us instead…

T-Rex vs. The Octopus
Posted on January 18, 2006 | Filed Under Dreams
Dream from last night:
I was going to work in a new department of my work and went into the new office, then I realized that i was a frog and i was hopping into a new area of swamp I’d never been to. The ground was all slimy, but I liked it, cause I was a frog! (what a strange feeling) Then I was back to being a human and I had done a good job (all that hard work while being a frog?) and I received a prize. A baby bear. And of course I cant keep a baby bear, I had to find a zoo or park to look after it. So I’m in the passenger seat of a Jeep being driven down this highway, looking for the zoo I guess. The surroundings were like a jungle, lots of mountains. Then we were beside the ocean and it got dark out, lots of stormy clouds. As the road goes closer to the ocean I see creatures in the ocean. A giant T-Rex dinosaur is fighting with/being drowned by a giant octopus-y squid. I think there might have been another creature there too, fighting with them but cant remember. I am pretty sure T-Rex lost and was drowned.
Analysis: Do I feel underappreciated at my job? So much so that I deserve a baby bear?
According to dream dictionary- dinosaur means Im afraid of being useless and octopus means im “entangled” in a problem.
huh.

Sick week?
Posted on January 17, 2006 | Filed Under Randomness
Well my cold from last week is still hanging on and so its been a slow recovery. Finally starting to feel better today, although my voice started to crack this afternoon after answering the phone at work all day.
Jeremy is taking his fourth round of antibiotics to fight off his strep throat.
We need to take some vitamins I think. Getting sick so much. I blame it on taking the packed bus and skytrain every morning with all the carrier monkeys out there.
Had a good weekend though. Saturday morning Karina came over from Victoria for a visit. We did some shopping and then joined Jeremy to meet friends at Rugby Club to watch hockey and drink insanely cheap beer. I think I was drunk by 6pm but thats the danger of 1.25 beer I think. After that, it was board games and fun at Chris and Mel’s and we were home passed out by 11pm. Sunday was a fun lazy day spent recovering and relaxing.
Last night I was chatting to my friend Adrienne in Victoria and she asked me to be a bridesmaid in her and Russ’ wedding next summer, so that was really exciting and Im looking forward to it :) Now, if only I could get down to it and get started on our own wedding plans…

Sick day
Posted on January 11, 2006 | Filed Under Randomness
I woke up this morning at 8am with a pounding headache and sore throat so I called in sick, trying not to feel guilty for not going to work. Jeremy emailed in shortly after that because his throat is still so sore and he could barely talk. So we both went back to sleep. Around 11am I woke up feeling worse so I dragged myself to the bathroom to choke down some disgusting medicine that would hopefully make me sleep more.
So back to bed and feeling wonderfully drowsy and soon fast asleep again…only to be ripped out of my cold medicine funky dreams at around 130pm by what sounded like an angry fist fight in my bedroom. Soon realized the yelling and screaming was coming from outside so I jumped outta bed and hurried into the living room. There was two men beating up what I think was a homeless person right below our kitchen window on the steps to our building. SCARY! Jeremy callled 911 and ended up giving them a complete witness account while I wandered around feeling helpless. You want to help but also dont want to be shot if they see you peering out the window to get a look at them. The police came eventually, we couldnt see because they had moved down the alley by then.
What is wrong with people? How can people have so much anger in them to make them want to kill people (the angry men were yelling they were gonna kill him with a baseball bat), It’s very upsetting.
And my adrenaline from waking up to that is now overpowering the drowsy effects of my cold medicine and am now wide awake and feeling slighty shaken.
