Canuck sighting

Yesterday I was feeling a little lazy so when my co-worker and walking-home-buddy offered me a ride home from gm place i accepted. We walked there to meet her husband who works for orca bay and waited for him for a little while. Then down to the parking garage. As we were leaving we stop at the entrance to let a car in. It was Bryon Allen (sp?) and he stopped and signed jerseys and cards etc for a lot of kids waiting there. That was so sweet, to see little kids all excited to get an autograph. The next car in was Ryan Kessler driving with Alex Auld in the passenger seat. Pretty cool.

Weird to think that they drive themselves to their games. Dont all rich people have chaffeured limousines? heh.

Submarine field trip

Posted on March 29, 2006 | Filed Under Dreams

Im going to try to write about my dream from Monday night. Its been two days and its still mostly clear. I think it was a combination of things going on my head including travel, friends, missing my family a bit lately, and a bunch of other stuff.

So in my dream the main plot line is that me and a bunch of friends (maybe fellow students) are getting ready for a big trip. We are all at my parents house in Victoria. Our house is as it was when we were growing up, with my grandparents still alive and living in their side of the duplex. I was running up and down the hallway in our house, trying to get my stuff together. My old bedroom was the same way it was when i was young. I was in there, trying to finish packing and then all of a sudden I start looking through my cd collection and just sit down and start browsing, organizing them, and then two hours go by and i realize that the flight or ferry or whatever we are getting is leaving in ONE HOUR. So i run outside to the driveway where everyone is and we pile all our bags into some pickup truck. (why wasnt someone bugging me to hurry? I think my room was a weird time bubble and the time went by quickly…)

So we get into the truck and I realize that inside it is completely different from a regular car. In this truck, there was a bench seat in the front with three spots, one side controlled the pedals and the other side steered the wheel and did the gears. The steering wheel wasnt round but was sort of rectangular. For some reason my parents’ neighbors were driving us, I think it was their truck. We are in a huge hurry but for some reason Lynn keeps driving us off the road. I was doing the pedals and she was steering, but kept veering off and we almost crashed. So i push her away and start doing both pedals and steering, meaning I am sorta lying sideways along the front seat. weird.

So we arrive at what I thought was the airport but it was really a boat dock/terminal. This was no usual ferry terminal. The trip we were trying to go on turned into a trip on a submarine. It was like a school field trip. So we file through the terminal up and down stairs, around winding corridors, and i start running through the stairways, because we werent gonna make it! we were so late! ahhhhh.

Then we arrive outside the terminal but we have to go down the dock to the submarine. The dock isnt one big piece, its all in strips of wood. You have to walk on each strip of wood like a teeter-totter to balance and get to the next one. There was animals, or frogs or something similar in the water and on the docks.

My dream then shifted completely and turned into more of an action movie rather than a travel-anxiety dream. The rest is hazy now, but it was one of those dreams where you remember that it was so fun, that you were flying around and saving the world, etc. I wish I could remember more details of the rest of it.

I havent been sleeping all that well lately so ive been having less dreams, or just remembering them less often. Hopefully next one will be more fun than a big travelogue.

Cut off

You realize how much you need a phone to survive when you leave your cell phone at work and had plans to meet your friend for dinner and you have no land line at your house.

Im so cut off and unreachable. Good thing my friend Ali lives one block away that I can just go to her house and talk to her.

Where are you cell phone? i need you.

Vacation detailed

Posted on March 28, 2006 | Filed Under Vacation

Well its now almost a week since we arrived home from our vacation and I still havent written anything. As usual, Im thinking and doing more than writing and reflecting. So, lets start farthest away with our trip to San Francisco.

The whole vacation was actually perfect I would say. Travelling wasnt even that stressful, flight was good, (and fast! only 2 hours), and getting around SF on transit was kinda easy. Train took us straight from airport to the last stop which was about 2 blocks from our hotel. We arrived Saturday Mar 18 just before noon I guess. We found our hotel, marvelled at its luxurious-ness, and then set out to find somewhere to eat and found this little mexican place on the docks. We spent Saturday walking around the neighborhood, along the water, found a drugstore and grocery store close-by. We had dinner at a brewpub called Gordon Biersch we found in our walkings nearby our hotel. (from then on for the trip all beer was called biersch, it was funny then)
Sunday we slept in a little (the bed was WAY too comfy) and picked up some picnic-makings at the grocery place and headed on the subway train/bus to go to Golden Gate Park. We had lunch there and walked pretty much the whole length of the park! A LONG WAY! Hours later, we arrive at the western end of the park and see the ocean. Had wine and bread at a little chalet restaurant there, sitting outside on some comfy lawn furniture, listening to the live jazz band play on the patio. Ahh it was nice. We arrive home exhausted, venture to a nice restaurant close by and have a late dinner.

Monday it was kinda cold and rainy. We had breakfast at Jamba Juice (now I get that SNL skit!) and then walked to the SF Museum of Modern Art. It was really awesome! I loved the Calder sculptures the best and Jeremy really liked a movie exhibit- a guy had filmed a barrel rolling down the streets of new york with a lense out each end and one in the middle and they showed it on three screens, so it looked like you were in a barrel rolling down the street. Pretty neat, but it made me nauseous if I watched it too long! During a freak five minute hail storm we ran to a nearby restaurant and proceeded to discover the WORST EVER Mexican restaurant in history. Seriously, it was bad. Bad service and bad food. awful. I think it was called Fresh Mex or something…Back to the MOMA for more art gazing, and then a walk through downtown once it stopped raining, and to union square and then walked home. Monday night we had dinner in our hotel room of Subway and wine. Fancy.

Tuesday we walked into town a bit, caught the cablecar to fishermans wharf. We spent a long time walking around there, had lunch at ghiradelli square, then more walking, we tried to get tickets to alcatraz but they were sold out so we got some for the next morning, and decided to do more walking. We walked up MANY MANY stairs to the Coit Tower, which was really cool, and had a great view, but it was overshadowed by the fun we had going back down. We found these wooden stairs that went down between peoples houses and gardens and there was wild parrots all over the place. It was really cool. Walk, walk, walk, home.

Tuesday night we went out for our super fancy dinner at bacar restaurant. Jeremy even wore his suit! Dinner was delicious! We spent a large amount of money on it but it was so worth it. and we managed to charm the waitress enough to sell us a bottle of wine to take with us. We each had a flight of wines with dinner and we bought our favorite white one! As I have been known to be a picky eater, I am quite proud of the fact that I actually tried lamb ribs as appetizer. Didnt like it all that much, but i tried it! I had the best pork chop that ive ever eaten in my life for dinner and Jeremy ate what i think was probably a 16 oz steak- it was big! Which was surprising, as usually fancy dinner places tend to have small portions. Not this place.

Wednesday morning (Mar 22) we got up WAY too early for vacation. 730am I think. We had our place packed up and we were checking out by 830am. Left suitcases at hotel and took cab back to the pier to go on the alcatraz tour by 915am. Spent a long time there, being a tourist, walking around with those little headset tour thing around your neck. It was quite neat to see it and be there, it felt pretty much like an archaeology site, with burned out ruins being taken over by plants and birds. After that, we had lunch on the pier at a little bakery, we were both kinda seasick, or tired, or just really hungry so soup in a breadbowl tasted really good. We took a trolley car back to the hotel and got our bags and took the train out to the airport. We arrived really early and just sat around, reading, napping until our flight and got home around 1130pm.

Ahh nice to be home! But whats with this tiny double bed?? I want that king size fluffy cloud of a bed thats magically made for you clean everyday! hehe.

We spent Thursday in a lazy daze and pretty much just snuggled with our cat, Jules and enjoyed being home.

I believe Jeremy is working on getting our pictures up on flickr so you might be able to see them soon :)

SF here we come!

Posted on March 16, 2006 | Filed Under Day to day, Vacation

Well, it’s only two more sleeps until we fly away for five days. Im very excited to see San Francisco and to explore a city I’ve never been to before. It will be so nice to have a vacation as we havent had one since Hawaii July 2004.

We have friends to house and cat sit for us, so Jules wont be completely alone. She has been kind of clingy and meow-y since we brought out the suitcases, so I think she knows something is up.

Ive been working hard at work to get all the piles of paper dealt with before I leave. I actually worked late till 630 last night. I really hate coming home to a messy desk, or house for that matter. I always try to have the house all clean and tidy before I leave for a couple days. Its just so nice to come home and be able to relax right away. Thats why I was still doing dishes at 11pm last night.

I had a weird sleep with lots of dreams that made no sense. In part of it my name rhymed with a vegetable. I think it was Buchinni, like zuchinni? weird.

I guess there will be a little hiatus here until we get back next week. Hopefully we will have good things to say about our trip.

Drowned rat

Posted on March 14, 2006 | Filed Under Day to day

Ive been trying to walk home almost everyday lately…Today when I left work at 5:12pm I thought it was nice out, not too cold, just lightly raining. By the time I got to GM place the sky had darkened and it started raining SO hard, with hail too. By the time I got to Main St skytrain station, my brown coat was drenched (and weighing ten pounds more), my pants were soaked and my legs numb from cold, and my running shoes were soaked and sloshing as I walked.

I decided to wuss out and catch a bus the rest of the way…and as I got home I noticed the beautiful blue sky above me and wondered where the storm went.

(Have to remember to take the running shoes to work next time)

Estimated time ~38 minutes.

The Police Came Twice

Posted on March 5, 2006 | Filed Under The Apartment

Crazy Lady came by this evening to tell me that she called the police twice this weekend while we were away in Victoria. She had heard a loud noise in our apartment and was worried. She claims it happened on Saturday and Sunday.

“There couldn’t be any loud noise, ” I said. “We were away all weekend.”
“It made a ‘bee-de-de-de-dee’ noise, two times <indistinguisable yammer> said they’d come back…”
“What time was the noise at?” I asked.
“The middle of the night,” she said.
Puzzled, “It wasn’t at 7:30 in the morning, was it?”
“Oh maybe,” she said.

I checked and aparently we forgot to un-set our alarm clock.

Somehow, I am amazed that the police still come when this lady calls.

Work babble

Posted on March 2, 2006 | Filed Under Day to day, Rants

Jeremy and I are headed over to Victoria tomorrow to visit my family for the weekend. Since we are going straight to the bus depot after work to get on the 7pm ferry there is a lot to do tonight; to do laundry and pack our bags, and clean up the dishes and house in general. Luckily I had some mountain dew energy at work this afternoon so Im kinda buzzed still. Ive already cleaned the kitty litter and taken out the garbage and recycling and Ive only been home a little while.

Work was good today, but I am struggling with an issue related to my “promotion” as I still havent really seen any hard evidence supporting it actually happening besides the incoming resumes of people applying for my position. The thing with this resume frenzy that my manager is going through is that I have seen some of them, and these people are way more qualified for my job than I actually am. All these people with crazy schooling and experience applying for a standard receptionist position is kind of overwhelming. It is quite clear that many of these people would be completely bored at this job. I think part of the problem is that the position was advertised with a slightly different title and it wasnt really clear that this job is pretty much a phone operator/secretary and not a really complex admin job. The more difficult admin job, with more responsibility and actual interaction with our clients is the job that I am moving to, in theory, hopefully…
I think the other reason for this huge response is that SO MANY people need jobs. I remember what it is like to be out of work, and needing a job badly. So, in that sense, I sympathize with these applicants and feel a strange sense of respect for them in that it is SO hard to be looking for work. Now because I feel this way, I am having a hard time not flipping out at my co-workers. Of course we will see the resumes, as they are coming in by fax and my boss has them at a desk in the middle of the office, but i would never think it my place to start looking through them. My boss seemed to not mind that my co-workers were looking through them and reporting to him the ones they liked, and making fun of them. I found this to be very hard to swallow, because I would hate to be the incoming person into our office and know that everyone there had looked at my resume and teased, laughed or otherwise made fun of it. I dont think thats cool. or professional. and maybe i shouldnt even be writing about it but it’s weighing on my mind.

I will balance this work rant with saying that today my coworkers surprised me with their kindness when discussing a past employee who was having health and money troubles and offering to pitch in money to help her, I thought that was very kind and sweet. But I still dont think its cool to laugh at peoples resumes. and Im sticking to it.
