Nothing says “Welcome home, I missed you while you were at work” like a big digusting hairball in the middle of the room and a cat sitting there with a somewhat accusing look that says “If you didnt leave to go to work but stayed home and brushed me this wouldnt have happened.”

Chronic, but not that kind
Posted on January 8, 2006 | Filed Under Rants, Jules
As a kid, i never had my tonsils taken out. Mostly because of that, i’m sick again with Tonsilitis . This is the fourth time in a row; basically every other week since November. So far, i’ve been prescribed penicillin twice and amoxicillin once. The antibiotics definitely worked quickly (esp. the amoxicillin), but a few days to a week after finishing the prescriptions i would just get it again.
The first two times, i went to this fancy clinic at the ground floor of Bentall 5 and got prescribed penicillin both times. The wait times were good (20 min), but the doc seems a little green. The third time, i was on vacation (heh) in Victoria, so i went to the clinic where my old family doctor works. After telling the doctor there how much penicillin i was prescribed before, he seemed quite shocked and gave me 10 days worth of amoxicillin. I was pretty out of it for both Xmas eve and day.
This is seriously starting to piss me off. I had to miss Mel’s birthday dinner on Friday (I told Laura it was OK if she went anyway). It’s also hard to concentrate on work when you’ve got a fever — i hate taking sick days, especially since i’ve taken so many lately.
I went to a different clinic on Friday. I told the doctor that i thought that the antibiotics aren’t working and that i’d like to be sure about what i’ve got until i take them again. He took a swab to verify that this is indeed a strep bacteria infection — why the first and second doctors didn’t do this, i don’t know. He said that he would request that the lab tests for resistances to various antibiotics. If i don’t hear from the clinic after 9 days, then it’s not strep, but something worse.
The most obvious alternative illness is Mono, but i don’t feel sleepy. My spleen was checked for tenderness, which supposedly can hapen with Mono, but it was fine.
On a slight tangent, if anyone knows a doctor in downtown Vancouver or Kits that’s accepting patients, i’d love to hear your referral. We’ll be visiting this local community health centre sometime in the next week to get set up with some interviews, otherwise.
So, here i am. Trying to rough it through is pretty brutal. Eating is painful, even with warm soup. Drinking cold water seems to help, but the relief is fleeting at best. Due to a slight miscalculation, i’ve already hit the maximum daily of whatever ultra-mega-super Tylenol is in the cupboard so getting to sleep might be a little rough. I may venture out tomorrow to find something more powerful.
On the bright side, Jules (our cat) has decided that the space in front of my keyboard is a great place to nap. She hasn’t ever sat with me at the computer since she moved here. When the construction’s going on upstairs — which has been super loud again today — she tries to burry her head underneath my arm. Aww!
